Ari Aster thinks Cure, by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, might be the greatest move of all time - so let's explain that! Leonardo DiCaprio at his best

This is actually the only movie I have ever bought to own. I will never forget my son and I looking at each other right after he kills Fausto and saying, "Now that is exactly how it would have happened in real life" Benicio Del Toro was absolutely stellar in this movie. The whole movie was great, but he made the movie IMO. The writing was perfection! I still long for Sicario #3!!!

Great job explaining everything! I largely agree with your ideas but have a few other things to add. To me, this is about Carl Jung’s ideas on the process of individuation. Adam is the Persona or the mask that the main character was taught from an early age was the acceptable way to be. Anthony, is often wearing black colors and represents the Shadow. The shadow is a very real part of our personality whose behavior, we’ve been taught was unacceptable and should be repressed. It becomes part of our unconscious, so much that we don’t even realize it is a true part of our personality. Mary (girlfriend) wears black in every scene, accept just prior to the accident. She wore a lighter color signifying a move from the unconcious to the concious. The mom wears black. Both Mary and the mother represent the Anima, which is the deeper part of Adam/Anthony’s unconscious. Anthony is an “actor,” but the characters he plays are subservient. He’s a waiter and a bellhop. Interesting that Adam’s last name is “Bell.” In other words, Anthony, a much more direct and selfish figure, is a real part of the personality, but he is playing much more meek characters (or wearing a mask) - namely Adam. Even though the shadow is a part of our unconscious, it does act out and influence our behavior, but often we are unaware why we behaved in a certain way. In the movie, we do see a few instances when Adam is being influenced by Anthony. Disregarding Mary to grade papers, then thinks it’s okay to copulate while she’s sleeping. Also, cheating on his wife was Anthony influencing Adam's behavior. The darkness represents the unconscious and gradually we see more light. Adam’s journey actually takes place deeper within himself, when he seeks out his shadow, and his anima. In the hotel hallway, the woman in black is walking away from Adam, while a woman in white is walking towards him. It means he is becoming more conscious of the deeper parts of his personality. Adam, being the persona isn’t really real, that’s why he doesn’t recognize Helen outside of the college, and why he doesn’t like blueberries. Anthony is wearing all black in the men’s club and covers his face signifying the unconscious shadow. The part of our unconscious, we don’t like about ourselves, we project onto others, that is why Anthony associates spiders and their webs to Helen and his mother, but he also was trapping his wife through marriage and pregnancy. At the end of the movie, when the accident occurrs, we see a web on the broken glass with a large dot in the middle. This signifies the convergence of the various parts of the personality coming together, i.e. persona, shadow, anima in the process of individuation. It’s about using the good parts of your shadow (assertiveness) anima (feelings) to become a better version of yourself. Before the accident, Adam was crying and apologizing to his wife- which shows incorporation of his anima. At the end, Adam was wearing a white shirt with a black jacket, showing that he has incorporated part of his shadow. We can read the letters on the key “UNICA,” which means individuality and distinctiveness which is another word for INDIVIDUATION. I don’t believe Anthony was going to the men’s club to cheat, because no sex took place there, and the part of his shadow that cheated very likely died in the car accident. He was going to indulge the part of his shadow that he is now conscious of. Since he is aware of that part, it will no longer unconsciously affect his behavior and cause him to cheat. Adam consciously saw his wife as a spider but was no longer afraid of being controlled. The spider’s fear could be a result of Adam, with his passive, friendly persona transforming into the individuated self who has now incorporated a portion of his shadow.

Great characters don't need to be good. He's not a hero. He's just a man looking for revenge. We understand him, and his motivations. This is not rocket science, and yet, big budget productions like the recent Marvel and Star Wars movies seems to forget about the most basic aspects of what makes a character great.

We know Loki will find Keller when the screen goes dark because Loki always allows his attention to detail, finding meaning in symbols, lead him to truth. He’ll remember the whistle, that Ana found it, and that Keller probably would find his way to the Jones house. Now we’re interacting with the film emotionally and intellectually, which we can’t do with most movies. We’re in the maze with them. We’re all prisoners.

Well crafted, indeed! Though you project too much onto the Alejandro character, questioning his fair reign to get even. Certainly the Kate character, not shooting him in the end, is not the same as asking for him to not get revenge. She doesn't even have family nor was she tested by life like he was. With many of these video essays around this movie, I take it, they'd all benefit from defining their understanding of philosophy, ethics, morals, legality and practicality upfront.

The final scene in the movie The Verdict starring Paul Newman is perhaps one of the most dramatic, but there is no dialogue. This is a poignant comment on the cinematic impact of silence. The analysis misses empathy in Sicario's dialogue "Not this one," evidence of distinction for killing an innocent bystander.

What a brilliant summary and explanation of this movie. I came here after watching this movie on television tonight (which meant I couldn't rewind to clarify or discover something). Unfortunately, subtitles were not available. I barely understood more than four words the entire time. And, yet, I still could not turn away from it. I understood most of WHAT was happening in the plot but not WHY it was happening. (I understood Joe and his mother's characters but was confused by the rest.) Apart from being partially deaf, I have prosopagnosia, so I couldn't tell the difference between some of the characters. For instance, who was the man who contracted Joe to find his daughter? Was he the same man as the senator? Who were these two men and what did they have to gain from this bloodshed? Was the father abusing or trafficking Nina? Who were all these other characters- police? Traffickers? Other than to draw Joe out or exact revenge, why was Joe's mother killed? Why was Nina so trusting of Joe? Why did she so easily put her arms around one of her captors? Why was she not a total screw-ball basket case? Ohhh... I need a chart or a graph to understand all this. I'd love to re-watch it WITH subtitles and that thing that Amazon PRIME does where I can stop and see who the characters are in a particular scene. To the YTuber who posted this: thank you for an awesome vid. I've subscribed and will be sure to check out more of your work.

Cutting the dialogue is such a great move. I hate how so many movies and tv shows nowadays feel the need to hold your hand and explain everything throughout the story. It's unrealistic and draws you out of the universe. Alejandro doesn't need to speak a lot, his actions are what conveys him as a great character.

I am not a religious person but I was raised in a Christian family so I can , sorry , I do see the world through two lenses in parables such as this movie. There is such a thing as evil, I've seen it and read of it many times. If i have not walked in another's shoes then I know not to judge. It may shock some, but Alejandro's execution of the children and wife do not bother me for the reason I already wrote of...Alejandro's shoes. It's a complex judgement.
